Here are a few ideas from my files. More available at:

Art:
Print Painting
Dip jungle theme cookie cutters and sponges into paint and apply to colored
construction paper.
Easel Painting
Provide several shades of green paint (create shades by adding white or a
little black
paint to the green) at an easel for children to blend and create with. As a
variation, you
could add mint extract for scent. The variety of shades of green will
represent the
leaves of the rainforest.
Collage
Make rainforest collages from rainforest products such as coffee, sugar, or
tea.
Rainforest Mural
Try dipping palm branches in green paint to make palm prints and cover
several large
sheets of paper. Once dry, this can serve as a background for a rainforest.
As you learn
about the rainforest, add food, plants, and animals to your mural.
Trees
Materials: newspaper, tape, scissors
Directions: Make newspaper trees by taking three sheets of newspaper and
rolling them;
overlapping as you go. Tape the bottom. Cut about 4 or 6 slashes 1/3 of the
way down
the top. Gently pull up on one of the inside "leaves" and then you have a
paper tree.
Variation:
Have the children make their own great kapok tree. Cut at least three long
sheets of
butcher paper. Cut them as long as 6 feet. Draw a tall tree on each paper.
Lay them on
the floor and have the children color them. Hang the trees up on the wall.
Vines
Use brown grocery bags to create vines. Fold the paper bag into thirds or
fourths and
cut into strips about 1 1/2 inch thick. Twist the bag as if you were
wringing out a wet
towel. Staple two or more twisted strips to make long vines.
Flowers
Have the children create flowers and leaves using construction paper.
Design a Bug
Many insects are living in the rain forests have never been seen by people.
Use your
imagination and see if you can create a bug that's just waiting to be
discovered. Don't
forget to name your new bug!
Tie Snakes
Make an anaconda from one of dad's old/ugly ties, (the busier the print the
better)! Cut
open on of the ends, and fill 2/3's all the way will poly fill (that pillow
stuff). Then, insert
either a hanger you have made straight or a length of medium light gauge
wire. Fill the
rest of the way, and sew/glue/web-
hanger gives
the body some shape and lets you twist it into any shape. Now, add googly
eyes and
the long tongue with the "v" shape at the end. When making your snake, leave
the tag
on the underside, the children can put the snake around their neck and put
their finger
4
through the tag to make them move. Tip: Use a doweling to poke the stuffing
down into
the tie.
Corky Frogs
Color corks green with crayon or marker. Use a green pipe cleaner and wrap
it around
the cork, twist it, then bend the long ends into frog shaped legs.
A string tied to the pipe cleaner can be used to pull the frog through
water.
Animal Cracker Art
Materials: light-blue Construction paper, Animal Crackers, Glue, Crayons or
markers
Directions: Give each child a sheet of light-blue construction paper and let
them create
a scene for their animal crackers to appear in. Add the animal crackers by
gluing them
onto their picture.
Fluffy Birds
Glue 2 popsicle sticks together to form a cross. Glue real or paper feathers
onto the
cross leaving the top for a head. Glue a paper head on top. Decorate with
markers.
Add eyes & a beak.
Zany Zebras
Give each child a construction paper cut out of a zebra with no stripes,
mane, or tail.
Use a fine brush or Q-tip & have them make stripes with black tempera paint.
When
paint dries, glue strips of paper on neck & tail. Have the children fringe
paper.
