[Real Ghosts] Funeral

Okay. My husband's grandma passed away, and she has a sister living
far away who couldn't attend the funeral. My in-laws decided we
should videotape the pastor's sermon at the funeral. It was something
I was uncomfortable with.

I charged the camera the entire night before, which is what I
generally do. The battery lasts an hour, it is a brand-new battery
which I've only used once before.

I set up the camera at the funeral, and the battery was full. I went
to turn it on about 5 minutes later to get my shot, and the battery
was only half full. The camera hadn't been on.

I turned on the camera and pressed record when the pastor got up to
talk. At the end of the 45-minute funeral, I went to turn off the
camera. It was already off.

I just checked it, and it only recorded 9 1/2 minutes. The battery
was completely dead.

It turned off right before my mother-in-law spoke. She got up to
compose herself, stood there a minute getting her thoughts in order,
opened her mouth, and the camera turned off.

I'd like to think it was just a battery problem. But I've never had
this happen. And a new battery that's only been used once shouldn't
do that. I'm not going to say that grandma didn't want her funeral
taped, but let's face it - would you want YOUR funeral taped?

I know I wouldn't.

And everyone in the room was staring at me like I was nuts when I was
setting up the camera. I felt REALLY uncomfortable. It just seemed
wrong, even though it's for her sister. But really, would she sit and
watch that? I wouldn't want to, no matter whose funeral it was.
Unless they got up and started dancing, hallelujah!

And now I'm not really sure how to tell the in-laws ... maybe I'll
have my husband do it.

I'm going to chalk this up to just battery failure, but it made me
think about how people filming at Jim's house have had their batteries
drained. Maybe something about being in the funeral home caused this?
No idea ....
