Lots of people I know who have shredders use shredded paper - however I
would worry about the toxicity of the ink when it's wet - but cats in the
main are very sensible.
I know they make a paper litter but I found it went like papier maché when
wet and was foul.
There's no problem with the way I dispose of it now - I just wondered how
everyone else did it. You seem to have a system that works :o)

my mom used to just dump hers in the woods. if you use clay litter it is
biodegradable. great way to fill in holes. in the winter i take the
solids out of mine and sprinkle it in the driveway. it melts the ice,
doesn't smell in the winter, and we have a dirt driveway anyway. right now
the guys are getting wood chips and newspaper in their litter box because
i'm broke.
